Ear wax removal outside working hours
An honest guide for people whose ears are blocked but whose diaries are worse.
We do not run evening clinics. What we do have is Saturday mornings, 9:00am to 1:00pm, plus weekday slots from 9:00am to 5:30pm at Davyhulme Pharmacy in Urmston. A twenty to thirty minute appointment fits a lunch hour if you work near the M41 area, and Saturday covers everyone else.
Plenty of clinics answer this question by pretending their hours suit everyone. Ours are what they are: a working pharmacy's hours. So instead of overselling, here is how people with full-time jobs actually get their ears cleared here, in rough order of popularity.
Option one: Saturday morning
The 9:00am to 1:00pm Saturday window exists almost precisely for this. It is our busiest ear-care session because commuters, teachers, tradespeople and shift workers all converge on it, so book ahead rather than chancing a same-day call. The visit is twenty to thirty minutes, which leaves the weekend intact. If you are combining it with the big shop or the kids' football run, the pharmacy's Canterbury Road location makes a tidy pit stop.
Option two: the edges of the working day
First slots after 9:00am suit late-starters and anyone on flexi-time; the last slots before 5:30pm work if you can leave a little early once. If your employer needs convincing, "medical appointment, twenty to thirty minutes, local" is an easy ask, and clearer hearing is arguably a workplace benefit.
Option three: the lunch hour
Genuinely viable if you work in or near Urmston, Davyhulme, Trafford Park or Stretford. Ten minutes each way, twenty to thirty inside, and microsuction needs no recovery time: you can go straight back to calls and meetings, hearing them rather better than before. Make the one visit count
When your diary only allows one attempt, preparation matters double. Olive oil two to three times a day for three to five days beforehand gives the clinician soft wax that comes out in one sitting, rather than hard wax that needs a return visit. The exceptions, as always: no drops if you have a perforated eardrum, grommets or any ear discharge; tell us when booking instead. And ears that hurt, leak or lost hearing suddenly need a GP or NHS 111 first, with sudden one-sided loss treated the same day.
