Cheaper here does not mean lesser: the technique, microsuction under direct vision by a trained clinician, is the same.
The four questions that reveal the real price
- "Is there an assessment or consultation fee if nothing is removed?" Some providers charge £20 to £35 just for looking. Ours is the opposite: no wax, no fee of any kind.
- "Is the both-ears price a bundle or double?" Both ears should cost meaningfully less than two singles, since it is one appointment. £60 versus two lots of £40 saves £20 here.
- "What happens if the wax is too hard on the day?" The fair answer is that you soften and return, paying once. The unfair answer is a fee per attempt.
- "Does the price include aftercare advice?" It should. Removal without an explanation of why the wax built up is half a service.
The NHS question
Ear wax removal is no longer a core GP service in most areas. Local access is referral-based and restricted: typically you must try softening drops for a period, then meet clinical criteria before a referral to a community ear care service. If you qualify, use it; it costs nothing. The private market exists for the many people who do not qualify, cannot wait, or simply want it done this week.
