Aftercare: the days after microsuction
What is normal, what is not, and the small habits that stretch the time until you need us again.
After microsuction you can return to normal life immediately: drive, work, fly. For the first day, keep the ears dry and put nothing in the canal. Expect sound to feel sharp and the ear slightly airy for a day or two. Pain, discharge or hearing getting worse afterwards is not normal; contact the clinic or your GP.
The first few hours
Microsuction needs no recovery period, which surprises people used to procedures that do. There is no anaesthetic wearing off and no dressing to mind. What you will notice is the world: after weeks of muffled listening, normal volume feels turned up. Traffic seems loud, your own footsteps oddly crisp. This is your brain recalibrating, not damage, and it settles within a day or two.
The canal itself may feel airy, tickly or faintly tender, especially if the wax was firm and long-standing. The skin under old wax is often a little pink and needs a day to normalise.
The first day or two: three simple rules
- Keep water out for around 24 hours. Shower with the ear tilted away or a cotton ball lightly coating the entrance with a smear of petroleum jelly on it. Freshly cleared canals absorb moisture readily, and a soggy start invites irritation.
- Nothing in the canal. No cotton buds ever, but for a day also avoid earplugs and in-ear buds where practical. The skin deserves a short holiday.
- Ease back into loud places. A cleared ear delivers full volume again; give concerts, power tools and noisy shifts a day if you can, or use over-ear protection.
What is not normal
Slowing the rebuild
Wax is not dirt; it is the canal's own protection system, and production never stops. The goal is keeping it moving outward, the way the canal is designed to. What actually helps:
- Retire the cotton buds permanently. They compress more than they collect. Wipe the outer ear with a flannel and go no deeper.
- Ration in-ear time. Earbuds, in-ear monitors and daily earplugs all block outward migration. Cut the hours where you can, or switch some listening to over-ear headphones.
- A maintenance dose of olive oil, one application once or twice a month, keeps wax soft and mobile for people who block up repeatedly. Skip this if you have a perforation, grommets or have been told to keep ears dry.
- Know your interval. Heavy earbud users and hearing aid wearers often return every six to twelve months. That is not failure; it is maintenance, like a dental hygienist for your ears.
If symptoms return
The muffled feeling creeping back months later usually means the canal is refilling, and a repeat visit to Davyhulme Pharmacy in Urmston takes twenty to thirty minutes: £40 one ear, £60 both, no fee if we look and find the canals still clear. If something feels different from wax this time, pain, pressure with a cold, dizziness, start with the blocked ear guide or your GP rather than assuming.
